The Ethiopia National Electoral Board fulfils its legal responsibilities and obligations: Chairman of the Board, Birtukan Mideksa

ETHIOPIA NATIONAL ELECTORAL BOARDChairperson of the National Electoral Board of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE), Birtukan Mideksa, said they will ensure that they fulfil their legal responsibilities and obligations.
The chairperson said this in a message to party leaders, party candidates and individual candidates.
In her message, the chairperson said, “When you register as a candidate for the 6th general election or as a party candidate, I think it is clear to everyone that the path ahead is partly hopeful, partly threatening.”
However, she said that we should start this joint effort with strength, not with weakness, with the capacity and opportunity to reduce the risk and turn it into a good one.
She said the Electoral Board is administering the process, which is designed to help the main actors of the process, whether left or right, small or large, national or regional, to solve their problems, increase its capacity, the extent of its impartiality and its impact.
If there is a candidate who intends to destroy the status quo by using any means at their disposal, not by a fair trial, but by deceit, not by disrespecting others, but by taking a non-electoral approach to public relations, let them expose their non-electoral work to the public. She also said that the fact that we have a small number of potential media outlets as a nation is a good fact that we can move forward for a better transition.
ETHIOPIA NATIONAL ELECTORAL BOARDShe also mentioned that they are working hard to complete the preparations for the hundreds of organisations, not just a handful, to inform our citizens about the real elections and to serve as election observers.
European and American observers have indicated that they are preparing to be part of the process with the government at the invitation of their governments to observe this important event for our country.
Many other aspects of our electoral reform can be mentioned, said Birtukan Mideksa, chairperson of the Ethiopian Electoral Board.
Finally, when the parties open their campaigns by registering candidates in different parts of the country, they demand that they add value to the process, work together in solving problems, abandon old-fashioned political violence, renew ourselves for modern and civilised competition, and most importantly respect our citizens’ authority.
She called on us to start the election in a positive spirit, not forgetting the solidarity of all of us and the role of each of us in this important and significant work.
