The 16th regular session of the House of Peoples’ Representatives ratified the draft proclamations for Defence Forces collaboration agreements with the French Republic and the Republic of Italy, unanimously.
During this recent session, it was Ambassador Mesfin Chernet, Assistant Whip State minister, who elaborated about the significance of the military agreements. As to him, Ethiopia’s determination to work with advanced military-tech countries is based on the will of gaining lessons and experiences.
Sovereign nations shall respect the territorial jurisdictions of other similar nations and if, by any unprecedented means a conflict happens, they shall resolve it in a sophisticated, round-table discussion rather than aggravating skirmishes, he said. Collaborations in the Defence sector could help for this purpose, the Ambassador explained.

MPs appreciated the agreements with opinions such as; it should have been conducted much earlier. Yet, they enquired about any dilemmas that may be caused due to different military uniforms introduced into the nation for one or another reason and the due duration of the agreements.
Ambassador Birtukan Ayano, State Minister of Foreign Affairs of the MoFA on replied; the variation of military uniforms can’t incur a problem because the purpose is simply a military collaboration in the training and info exchange areas with countries under discussion. Regarding the military secrets, the memorandum clearly stated limits and the duration is five years which may be re-conducted as per the bi-lateral talks, she elucidated.
Ato Getachew Hailemariam, State Minister of the Ministry of Defence Forces, on his part said; Ethiopia has been undertaking discussions with advanced nations to promote its level of military status and such agreements, being part of the discussions taken so long, will be essential inputs for the country.
