This is the Dangiya primary school found in the rural town called Merkta in Awi, Banja woreda that was built by the Swedish government in 1957 E.D. Even after years, the society has grown its awareness to teach its children and with the participation of the community, it has been able to prepare its classrooms made out of mud.
Dangiya primary school has produced successful students for many years, and former students of this school are working in different professions in the country and abroad.
The school at this time is dilapidated and it is a health hazard to both students and staff. This school that produced many scholars is becoming a threat to the students. According to principal Alamrew and Dangiya construction supervisor Mr. Yaregal Nega, Most of the classrooms are out of service.
Failure to renovate or improve the image of the school are raised as reasons for the low annual income of the school and the local community income source. Dangiya primary school, the only one in the city, has produced a lot of educated manpower, says the school officials. The windows, doors, walls, floor and ceiling are a falling apart and are a health and safety hazard.
This has created a negative image of the school-the negative aspect is also causing a decrease in students’ grades and a threat to their safety. Due to the existing problems and tightness of classes, the number of students is decreasing from time to time. Therefore, former students, parents, scholars, and those involved in business and the local community have called for this to change.
According to the comments given by the farmers of the area, the school has produced many scholars and according to the results, they said it is still a school. But they say the school history and the current situation are not related. The farmers who say that the school has become a threat to the students because of the collapse of the school have expressed their willingness to save the school willingly and by force. The former students and the government that the school produced both at home and abroad have sent a message to save the existence of the school.
Banja Woreda General Administrator Mr. Mola Wele has 54 primary schools in Woreda. He said that there are works that have been started to improve the status of 8 schools by owning the community. Mr. Mola said that Dangiya is the first primary school in the district. The administrator who pointed out that he has produced many scholars in his 58 years has stated that the school is collapsing and children are learning in danger. Even though there is work that has been started to save the school with the help of the community to build one block, they said that using the capacity of the community to read one or more blocks, it requires more than ideas and action.
The head administrator who pointed out that most of the local community is known for investing in their children, he has called for development partners, former students and the local community to work together to build the school.
Dangiya primary school is teaching 900 students and there are about 40 teachers and administrative staffs.
